SSPIRG is a group of educators (formal and informal)that are interested in fostering PIRGs at a high school level. Secondary students become passionate and empowered when given the opportunity and/or liberty to research and act on their own ideas (ie. action research). High school students should also be encouraged to critically think about societal ideas and learn to question the status quo. By setting up PIRGs in high schools, students get the chance to act on their beliefs, and educate their peers about important issues that are felt both locally and beyond.
SSPIRG involves primarily post-interns (UofR students in their final semester of Education with direct/personal ties to a high school). These connections will allow the Working Group to find immediate success in setting up several PIRGs (in different schools) with students that the members know are interested.
Within the first month of becoming a working group, the post-intern members will create contacts with schools and interested students. Within the second month, the major event (the workshops) will take place. The two remaining months will be spent mentoring and guiding the Secondary School PIRGs while trying to create events, blogs, or outings to link the students together (share ideas, projects, etc).
